best eyeshadow primerIt’s the great primer debate…

Hi you guys!

OK, so earlier tonight I Tweeted and asked which eyeshadow primer is the best?

I am asking this question because of a few reasons:

  • A) I value your opinions,
  • B) I have only really used UDPP so I don’t know the answer
  • C) and I am trying to recommend the best eyeshadow primer for my sister who keeps telling me she is on the hunt for something that will really do the trick!

So, here are my thoughts on the best eyeshadow primers…

First off, I came to start using Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion when I bought the first Naked palette last year.  I had never really been too big on primers, and then when I used this I was smitten and haven’t turned back.

I had only ever had the Smashbox Photofinish Lid Primer which unfortunately was a huge waste of cha-ching, and I was royally disapointed.  It is so drying and seriously flakes.  Like what is up with that??  Is it just me?? lol

Anyway, so like I said, UDPP it was.  Then when my bff gave me Too Faced Shadow Insurance and I tried it, I noticed a big difference in that it was really quite mattifying on the skin which I L-O-V-E!  Something that I don’t particularily find so much with Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

MAC painterly paint potNow, this question also gets me thinking to MAC Paint Pots. Painterly has seriously been on my wish list forEVA… and I am determined to get this.  Every time I see someone on YouTube use it I think, “must.buy.soon” but I have yet to.

Also I’ve heard wonders about NYX which I don’t own (and like anything I don’t own I want, lol)  and even L’Oréal, Coastal Scents, ELF, you name it ;)

So why prime?

In a single word: LONGEVITY.

But, like anything, it’s a personal choice.  For those who find their eyemakeup literally disappears after half a day, or find that their eyeshadow creases like crazy, or even the eyeliner smudges off too easily then in my opinion invest in a good primer.  It will help to fix ALL these problems, and improves the look of the color of the shadow itself; brights are brighter, glitters pop, etc.

But the best eyeshadow primer?  You be the judges!

Let’s chat about it!

I totally agree primers also help to make your shadows more vibrant too because you are putting a cream base onto powder :D xx

I really like using paint pots or the maybelline colour tattoo’s as my primer. i’ll usually put UDPP under a paint pot if I’m going to be going out to a party or something, but for normal day wear I use MAC’s paint pot in “painterly” :)

MAC’s Painterly gets rave reviews… I must get it;) And Maybelline color tattoos hey, what a great idea! thanks hun! xox

I really wasn’t a fan of Painterly, it never felt creamy going on, I felt like I really had to tug on my eyes to get it to go on evenly…I even scooped some out & warmed it up with my fingers…still no luck. I thought maybe I had a bad one so I got another and the same thing. Me no likey. :(

That’s really interesting… I wonder if I’d find the same problem, or if anyone else find that happens?! I should definitely test it first. I hope u got a refund? Thanks for the comment sweetie!! xox

The Urban Decay one is my favorite for long wear, although I also use elf’s primer too. It don’t last as long but for just $1 it’s well worth it to me. :)

I love elf! And for $1 you are so right Jessica, it’s an amazing brand!

I was a fan of UDPP for about as long as the tube lasted. But I had a hard time wanting to spend another $18 to rebuy it. I then moved onto E.L.F Eyelid Primer, which at $1 was much kinder to my wallet, but faded more then I liked. I just bought Too Faced Shadow Insurance and I think it’s the right one for me. It’s a little pricey, but it a touch thicker then UDPP, it squeezes out so less waste (I know UDPP went squeeze too) and it doesn’t fade like like E.L.F. I never had luck with Paint Pots and my oily lids, I also could never even cause a dip in the product before it dries out. It’s a pass for me.

Thank you for this comment – super helpful!! I just did a test on my lids yesterday: 1 with UDPP, the other with TFSI and I have to say that with thick liner, dark brown shadow both gave me the same results (very good ones too). I love elf so much, but I’d likely continue to invest in a quality primer like u said. MAC painterly is something I am so curious about….we’ll see! Thanks again!! xo

I have been using UDPP for a couple years now and was in love with the way it made the shadow pop! I have oily lids and no matter what my eyeshadow never creases. I’ve been on the hunt for another primer for which I could blend shadows better with. UDPP is great and my shadow stays put all day but its not the best for blending shadows cause it makes it stay put so good. I’m a huge MAC fan that’s mostly the products I use and have not tried the paint pots but I really want to. I loved the shadesticks. They did crease a little but overall liked them. Too bad they don’t make them anymore. Just looking for a primer that blends shadows good. Let me know if you find one. I’ll stay on the hunt too! :)

Hmmm I wonder how the NYX milk jumbo pencil holds up with blending… I hear so many good things about it used as a primer. It’s a really good question though! I too will keep you posted! Thank you for your comment hun! xo
